Expert Review
Origins
Villa Kalyana was built as a private beachfront estate on a scale rarely seen even in a part of the world known for grand villas: 26 bedrooms spread across its own bay, said to be the largest private beachfront villa in Southeast Asia. It sits at Laem Sor, on the quiet, traditional southern tip of Koh Samui, a different world in pace from the island's busy north-east, on a semi-private bay of golden sand looking out to the little islands of Koh Matsum and Koh Tean.
The estate is arranged as two matching wings, Orchid and Lotus, each with ten bedrooms including a children's bunk room, plus a separate cluster of eight beachfront bungalows, which is what makes it so adaptable: it can be taken in part, from seven bedrooms, or in full for a wedding or large celebration. At its heart is a two-storey lounge pavilion built around a 250-year-old hand-carved wooden sala, a real antique with sea views down the garden, and around it lie two pools set in coconut gardens, a hammock island reached by a wooden bridge, beachfront massage salas, a gym and yoga pavilion, a cinema and a games room. The whole place is fully staffed and run by a live-in team with a private chef, so it functions as a self-contained retreat, most often for the weddings, family gatherings, group holidays and corporate retreats it was designed around.
Top Secret
The team can lay on a private dinner straight on the sand of your own bay, a table set out under candlelight with the sea a few steps away, a castaway feast with none of the roughing-it: barefoot, but with a chef and a full spread.

The Review
Villa Kalyana is not a hotel but a private estate, taken over in whole or in part, and its appeal is the run of an entire beachfront bay on the quiet southern coast of Koh Samui. With 26 bedrooms across its grounds, said to be the largest private beachfront villa in Southeast Asia, it is built for the kind of trip that needs space and privacy at once: a big family holiday, a group of friends, a retreat, and above all a wedding or celebration.
The setting does much of the work. The estate has its own semi-private bay at Laem Sor, with its own stretch of golden sand, turquoise water and views to a pair of small islands, and the far-south location keeps it quiet and traditional, well away from the island's crowds. Accommodation is spread across two wings and a row of beach bungalows: the eight bungalows fold open to the sand with indoor and outdoor bathrooms, and the master suiteadds a private jacuzzi terrace and its own massage sala. At the centre, a two-storey lounge pavilion is built around a 250-year-old hand-carved wooden sala, a genuine antique and the property's signature.
What makes it work is that it is fully staffed and endlessly flexible. Guests can book from seven bedrooms up to the full 26, and a live-in team runs the place, headed by a manager and a private chef, Seri, who cooks Thai and international menus planned with guests day by day, served anywhere from the long banquet table to a candlelit dinner on the sand. Two pools, one with a shallow children's section, sit in the coconut gardens, alongside a hammock island, beachfront massage salas, a gym and yoga pavilion, a cinema and a games room, enough that there is rarely a reason to leave.
