Expert Review
Origins
Ammatara Pura is a small, independent, family-run resort on a quiet stretch of Lamai Beach, on the east coast of Koh Samui. It was created by its Thai owner around an idea she calls Raja living, loosely the art of living like a king, and it shows in the design: the resort is built in an ornate, palace-and-temple style, all carved timber, steep tiled roofs and rich detail, filled with Thai antiques and original art, so it feels quite unlike the island's white-box beach resorts.
There are just 18 villas, which keeps the place intimate and the service genuinely personal. They come in three types, 60-square-metre one-bedroom garden or sea-view villas and larger 160-square-metre two-bedroom beachfront villas, and each has its own private pool, a jacuzzi-jet tub, an outdoor shower and a fully equipped kitchen with a washing machine, which makes them work as well for families and longer stays as for couples. The resort opens directly onto the sand, with a large beachfront pool, a lap pool and a beachfront restaurant serving Thai and Western dishes, and rates include weekly yoga and Thai cooking classes and a shuttle into Lamai town, a couple of minutes away on foot. What guests remember, though, is the warmth of the small team, the kind who greet you by name by the second day.
Top Secret
One of the resort's nicest touches costs nothing: the staff will dress you in traditional Thai costume and take you around the palace-like grounds for a photo session, a genuinely fun, slightly theatrical keepsake that guests mention again and again.
The Review
Ammatara Pura is one of the more distinctive places to stay on Koh Samui: a small, independent, family-run resort of just 18 pool villas on Lamai Beach, built in an ornate palace-and-temple style that sets it firmly apart from the island's minimalist beach hotels. It is a design that divides opinion, gloriously over-the-top to some, a touch much for others, but it is unquestionably its own thing, and the warmth behind it wins almost everyone over.
The villas are large and comfortable, in three types: 60-square-metre one-bedroom garden or sea-view villas, and 160-square-metre two-bedroom beachfront villas, the largest. Each has its own private pool, a jacuzzi-jet tub, an outdoor shower and, unusually, a full kitchen with a washing machine, which makes them genuinely practical for families and longer stays. The decoration is rich and Thai, with antiques and original art, and while a few of the villas are starting to show their age, most guests find them spacious and characterful.
The setting helps. The resort opens straight onto a calm stretch of Lamai sand, with a large beachfront pool, a lap pool for laps and a beachfront restaurant, and the shops and restaurants of Lamai town are a two-minute walk away. Rates include weekly yoga and Thai cooking classes and a shuttle into town, and breakfast is cooked to order from a menu chosen the night before rather than laid out as a buffet, a small thing guests love.
Above all, it is the service that brings people back. With only 18 villas, the family-run team knows guests by name within a day, and the personal, attentive hospitality is what almost every review singles out. Lamai is quieter and less polished than Chaweng, half an hour north, with its own lively, slightly rough-edged town close by, but for a characterful, warmly run beachfront villa with your own pool, Ammatara Pura is among the most appealing places to stay on Koh Samui.
