Origins
Villa Moonshadow is, above all, a piece of architecture. Completed in 2013 and designed by the Thai architect Bodin Sritrakul, it stands on a headland high above Chaweng Noi on Koh Samui's east coast, its curved, low-slung form stepping down the hillside in three linked pavilions that seem to grow out of the slope. The design has won architectural awards, and it shows: long elegant curves, floor-to-ceiling glass and open-plan spaces are arranged around a single, spectacular asset, a 180-degree view over Coral Cove and the Gulf of Thailand.
Inside, the villa is built for exclusive use by one party at a time. Three of its four bedrooms sit in their own pavilions with private terraces and sea views, while the fourth adjoins the double-height living and dining space at the centre; the whole is dressed in a calm, contemporary palette with handcrafted Thai art and sculpture. Outside, a 60-square-metre infinity pool runs along the sundeck toward the horizon, with a waterfall at the entrance and tropical gardens around. It comes fully staffed, with a private chef cooking breakfast and lunch, a villa manager and a multilingual guest-relations team, and its hilltop position gives it real privacy while keeping Chaweng's beaches, restaurants and golf within a few minutes' drive. It is a design-led retreat for a family or a group of friends who want a view, a pool and a place with genuine character.

The Review
Villa Moonshadow announces itself from a distance, a low, curved, architect-designed villa set high on Chaweng Noi hill on Koh Samui's east coast, surrounded by trees and looking out over the sea. It is the work of the Thai architect Bodin Sritrakul, and its design, three linked pavilions stepping down the slope in long elegant curves, sets it apart from the many villas that have sprung up on the island; this is a genuine piece of contemporary architecture rather than a standard rental.
The villa is arranged for exclusive use, sleeping up to eight across four bedrooms. Three of them sit in their own pavilions with private terraces and 180-degree sea views; the fourth is by the double-height living and dining space at the heart of the house, where floor-to-ceiling glass opens the whole interior to the view and lets the sea breeze run through, so the main living areas rarely need air conditioning. The decoration is contemporary and calm, with handcrafted Thai art throughout, and the real showpiece is outside: a 60-square-metre infinity pool along the sundeck that appears to merge with the sea and sky, with a lovers' bench, loungers and shaded pods around it, and a waterfall and gardens at the entrance.
It comes fully staffed, which is much of the pleasure. A private chef cooks breakfast and lunch, a villa manager looks after the day-to-day, and a multilingual guest-relations team arranges trips out, to the Na Muang waterfalls, the beaches, the island's restaurants, whenever you can bring yourself to leave. For those who don't, the pool, the view and the sundeck fill the days easily.
One honest note: this is a hillside villa, not a beachfront one, so the beach is a short drive downhill, and at four bedrooms it suits a family or a group of friends rather than a large party. But for design, privacy and a view, few villas on Koh Samui match it: for the right group, Villa Moonshadow is among the most striking places to stay on the island.
