Expert Review
Origins
Anantasila sits on Khao Takiab Beach, at the quiet southern end of Hua Hin, the Gulf-coast town that has been Thailand's original seaside resort since the royal family began summering here a century ago. Khao Takiab, named for the "chopstick hill" and monkey-topped temple headland that closes the bay, is the calmer end of it: a long, uncrowded beach with a relaxed, almost village feel, a different world from the bigger hotels up the coast.
Anantasila is a family-run resort, and that is its defining quality. It is not a grand five-star address but a warm, well-kept beachfront place of 79 rooms and villas, spread across eight designs, from poolside rooms and apartments to sea-view suites and a few private-pool villas, most in a Northern Thai Lanna style. An 8-by-30-metre pool faces the sea, there is a good beachfront restaurant serving Thai and Western food at fair prices, and the beach is right there for swimming, sunbathing and massages on the sand. What lifts it above the many comfortable resorts along this coast is the service: consistently, warmly personal, the kind that turns first-time guests into regulars. With Hua Hin's town centre a short shuttle away and the beach on the doorstep, it is a friendly, good-value base for a relaxed stretch of the Gulf coast.
Top Secret
At the end of the beach rises Khao Takiab, the headland temple locals call Monkey Mountain; climb the steps for a wide view over the Gulf and the bay, but keep a firm hold on your sunglasses and snacks, the resident macaques are bold and quick-fingered.
The Review
Anantasila Beach Resort is proof that the warmest welcome does not always come from the grandest hotel. This is a family-run beachfront resort at the quiet Khao Takiab end of Hua Hin, and while it makes no claim to five-star luxury, it is consistently one of the best-liked places to stay on this stretch of the Gulf coast, for reasons that have far more to do with people and setting than with marble and thread counts.
The location is a genuine draw. Khao Takiab is the calm southern end of Hua Hin, a long, uncrowded beach with a laid-back, almost village feel, closed at one end by the monkey-topped temple headland that gives it its name. The resort sits right on the sand, with an 8-by-30-metre sea-view pool, a children's pool and a beachfront restaurant that turns out good Thai and Western food at fair prices, and the town centre is a short resort-shuttle ride away.
The rooms are comfortable and well kept rather than lavish, and it is worth knowing they span eight quite different designs, from poolside rooms and apartments to sea-view suites and a few private-pool villas, so sizes and styles vary; some are more up to date than others, and it pays to ask. But the thing every guest mentions is the service. Family-run and genuinely warm, the team is the reason people return year after year, and it is what lifts Anantasila above the many perfectly nice resorts along this coast.
It is worth being clear about what this is: a relaxed, good-value, family-friendly beach resort, not a luxury flagship. But for a quiet beach, a sea-view pool and some of the warmest service in Hua Hin, at a price that leaves plenty over, Anantasila is among the most likeable places to stay on Khao Takiab.
