Origins
The Chiang Mai Riverside is a small, family affair. It was built by a local Chiang Mai family whose roots are in the furniture trade, and that business still supplies the fixtures and fittings throughout the hotel, which is part of what gives the place its settled, residential feel: this is a home the family furnished, opened to guests. The result is an all-suite hotel residence of just 14 suites, on the bank of the Ping River a little south of the city.
The design draws on the Lanna style of Northern Thailand, elegant but understated, and the suites are built for living rather than a quick overnight, running from one to two bedrooms, several with their own kitchens, balconies and dressing areas. Service is the other half of the appeal: each stay comes with a personal butler, and breakfast is cooked to order and brought to your suite. The family's ethos runs through it, with an emphasis on local staff, training and home-grown, organic produce from the hotel's own garden, which also supplies the riverside cooking classes and The Vorra Bistro. Quiet, personal and just far enough from the centre to feel calm, with a free shuttle into town, it is a residential kind of luxury rather than a big-hotel one.
Top Secret
Right beside the hotel lies Wiang Kum Kam, the former capital of the Lanna kingdom, a buried ancient city that predates Chiang Mai itself and was lost for centuries under river silt; its temples and ruins can be explored by bike or pony-trap, and are rarely crowded.

The Review
The Chiang Mai Riverside is a different kind of city stay: an all-suite hotel residence of just 14 suites on the bank of the Ping River, a little south of Chiang Mai, quiet, personal and family-run. It suits travellers who want space, calm and a residential feel over a big hotel in the thick of the Old Town.
The suites are the heart of it. All are generous, residential one- and two-bedroom suites in an understated Lanna style, several with their own kitchens, balconies and dressing areas, the kind of place you unpack properly and stay a while. The hotel is owned by a local family whose furniture business supplies its fittings, and that shows in the settled, homely feel, as does the service: each stay comes with a personal butler, and the signature is a cooked-to-order breakfast brought to your own suite, a genuinely lovely way to start a slow morning.
Beyond the rooms, the pleasures are gentle and well judged. There is a garden and outdoor pool by the river, The Vorra Bistro serving Thai food built around the kitchen's own organic garden, and a riverside cooking class using that same home-grown produce. The setting has a rare bonus: the hotel sits right beside Wiang Kum Kam, the buried former Lanna capital that predates Chiang Mai, a quiet and atmospheric site to explore on the doorstep.
One honest note: the riverside position is about ten minutes south of the centre, so it trades walk-everywhere convenience for calm, though a free shuttle and airport transfers ease that. But for a quiet, personal, residential base in Chiang Mai, with standout butler service and a real sense of a family's own home, The Chiang Mai Riverside is among the most appealing places to stay in the city.
